James & Madeleine's engagement

Decortree had the honour and priviledge to be a part of one of the most special moments in the lives of Madeleine & James Sullivan, their engagement day. Please join us below is what was a journey full of excitement, creativity, emotions and, simply, true love.

Madeleine and James met in 2018 and became a bumble success story; they share two fur babies; Paladin and Olive and being a creative personality; James’ proposal had to be one for ages. After a big week at work, James took Madeleine out to dinner at Attica to celebrate Madeleine finishing up her second clerkship and university exams.

Preying on her tiredness and work focus, James executed an elaborate proposal plan to ensure that Madeleine had no idea that the proposal was happening. After dinner, James organised one of his friends; Jenny, to pick up the couple posing as a fake Uber driver. To ensure that Madeleine had no idea; Jenny wore a wig, staged a fake argument in Cantonese, borrowed her brother’s car and laminated Uber and QR code stickers.

Jenny dropped Madeleine and James off to a park in Malvern East, where James and Madeleine’s friends had placed candles in a heart-shape under a fairy light tree.

James wanted a fairy light tree in a park that they went on their third date in, that lit on the park the same way Madeleine lights up James’ life. He also wanted something special to the two of them would always see when they walked their dogs and no one else knew was there. Something that would forever crystallise in their memories of the moment.

While walking up to the candle heart the song 'This Year's Love' by David Gray began to play, then James got down on one knee and asked Madeleine if she would marry him, in the excitement of the moment and between tears Madeleine said yes! After a few amazing photos, James clapped his hands and their friends and family emerged from the bushes for one last surprise with champagne.

Laura and her team were so amazing to work with, the proposal wasn’t until late in the evening, but they were happy to drop it off and pack it up and allowed plenty of time and helped with setting up to make sure that the fairy light tree was the perfect backdrop. For anyone considering their trees, we can confirm that they were an absolute delight to work with and made James’ hopes of an incredible background to the proposal a reality.
